Overview

For the first time since the founding of the European Shock Society (33 years ago), its congress will be held in France, and Paris will host the XVIIth Congress of the ESS from 13th to 15th September, 2017.

An international committee has proposed 55 different topics, and 15 of them have been selected by the members of the ESS Executive Committee and by the French Organising Committee.

Three “premières” will happened:

  • For the first time, based on the initiative of Markus Huber-Lang (our President-Elect), a student-oriented “Shock Summer School” (SSS) will be organized on the very first morning of the congress. Its general topic is “sepsis” and the SSS will be fittingly held during the “World Sepsis Day”.
  • For the first time ever, a joint session with the Chinese Shock Society will be organized.
  • For the first time ever, a joint session with the US Shock Society will be organized.

ETOX is a label for a well-established and reputed series of “European Workshops on Bacterial Protein Toxins” initiated in 1983 with the impulsion of Joseph E. Alouf and in association with John Freer, Sjur Olnes, Paul Falmagne, Franz Fehrenbach, Rino Rappuoli and Torkel Wadstrom.

Since then the ETOX series are held biannually throughout different European countries. The first meeting was held in France, in the small town Seillac close to the famous Loire castles, and it was organized by Professor J. E. Alouf from Institut Pasteur, Paris. This seminal ETOX workshop was a great success regarding the logistic organization as well as the quality of the scientific talks.

The 18th ETOX edition is coming back to France, and will be held at Institut Pasteur Paris which is an attractive and stimulating scientific place that continues to promote outstanding research on all aspects of infectious diseases including protein toxins. It will be an exciting opportunity to visit Institut Pasteur and to pay a tribute to some of its scientists notably J. E. Alouf.

In the tradition of the previous workshops, ETOX18 will gather well-known world scientists as well as young researchers and students for stimulating exchanges and discussions in the field of bacterial protein toxins and other secreted virulence factors. Talks from world leaders, junior scientists, and students will contribute to present the multifaceted aspects of the bacterial protein toxins from the genetics and the regulation of their production to their structure, biochemical activity, interaction with host cells and tissues, including innate and adaptive immunological responses. A better understanding of bacterial protein toxins allows an improved comprehension of the pathophysiological processes but may also lead to development of appropriate therapeutic and preventive measures; the bacterial protein toxins also represent invaluable tools to dissect fundamental biological processes.

This meeting will be without doubt an exciting and stimulating workshop, and thus we are looking forward to welcoming you soon in Paris.
